"A beautiful way to support the trail"
Earl Shaffer Foundation
Never one to have a desire to accumulate money, Earl sought John's help in setting up a nonprofit foundation. He realized that he would be collecting book royalties on the not yet released Calling Me Back to the Hills. So he and John discussed different projects that he wanted to support. During what would turn out to be Earl's final few months, John established the Earl Shaffer Foundation. It was approximately at this time that Bart conceived the idea of combining Earl's poem and his photograph of Katahdin to raise money. When Bart approached John with the idea, the feeling was that this could not have come at a better time because of the newly established Earl Shaffer Foundation (ESF). The general consensus was that The Katahdin Art Project could help generate an even greater amount of money to be distributed to worthy causes Earl wanted to support.
The following organizations were all close to Earl's heart. It is an honor for us to be part of this undertaking, so that additional funds can be generated for these worthwhile endeavors.
1. Salvation Army
2. Appalachian Trail Land Trust
3. Center for Appalachian Trail Studies
4. ALDHA
5. Penn State Forestry School
6. Appalachian Trail Museum Society
7. Local Appalachian Trail Hiking Clubs
